For a long time I've enjoyed reading books about life in small English villages. To put some information here has proved to be no easy task. There is just a little I can put here - all gathered from my searching the internet.

Miss Read was born 1913 as Dora Jessie Shafe. In 1940 she married Douglas Edward John Saint and they had one daughter Jill. As a child she holidayed near Walton-on-Sea where her grandfather had a plot of land.

Mrs Dora Saint used the name Read which was her mother's maiden name.

Miss Read wrote more than forty novels, especially about Fairacre and Thrush Green, and in 1996 finished her writing career with "A Peaceful Retirement"

You can see all her writings by:

Alibris - Books You Thought You'd Never Find

Added to the usual websites selling books there is one where you can rent or buy audio versions of some of Miss Read's Books. At Storytapes.com the books are arranged by book title.
